A survivor of a shipwreck, Viola arrives in Illyria where, to protect herself, she disguises herself as a man and calls herself Cesario, taking on the appearance of her twin brother. She then enters the service of Duke Orsino. Charmed, he makes her his valet and charges her with conveying his love to Countess Olivia. But Cesario/Viola, secretly seduced by the Duke, excels so well in his mission that the Countess falls in love with his ardour...
