Quelques semaines au sortir de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale avant que Mère Teresa ne fonde sa propre congrégation, les Missionnaires de la Charité. A Calcutta, en 1948. Le temps presse, Mère Teresa doit préparer le couvent à son départ imminent et désigner celle qui lui succédera. Elle a choisi la seule candidate possible à ses yeux : Sœur Agnieszka. Mais très vite, Agnieszka avoue qu’elle doit refuser cette proposition car elle est enceinte du fruit d’une brève relation amoureuse. Agnieszka veut avorter et pour elle, seule Mère Teresa peut lui venir en aide. Déchirée entre ses croyances et sa compassion, Mère Teresa pourra-t-elle porter ce lourd secret ?

Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska (GOD EXISTS, HER NAME IS PETRUNYA, THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD) presents a bold and unconventional portrait of Mother Teresa of Calcutta in her new film MOTHER, played by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (PROMETHEUS, LAMB). The film focuses on the story of the nun before she became a world-famous figure. Its aim is to explore the real person behind the myth of Mother Teresa, revealing her complexity, ambitions, and inner struggles. The film was the opening and competition film in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival.
