À la veille de la destruction du bâtiment qui l’a accueilli pendant plus de cinquante ans, comment le Cercle Culturel Curiel, sous ses allures de trattoria, a-t-il pu avoir une influence majeure sur la vie politique et culturelle au Luxembourg ?

Au 107 route d’Esch, le Circolo Eugenio Curiel se trouve dans une situation embarrassante. Siège luxembourgeois du Parti communiste italien, dissous en 1991 et refondé en parti social-démocrate, cette maison est prise en étau par les projets immobiliers qui fleurissent dans la capitale. Elle sera détruite début 2024.

D’un point de vue architectural, l’immeuble, acheté en 1978 par cette Asbl n’a rien de particulier. Pourtant, ce lieu a fait les beaux jours de nombreuses associations, mais aussi d’organisations politiques luxembourgeoises. La trattoria et les salles de réunions constituent un lieu de mémoire pour les mouvements de la gauche plurielle.

Garder une trace, c’est surtout parler de la naissance d’un berceau culturel pour le Luxembourg dont le résultat nous entoure et nous alimente de façon inconsciente aujourd’hui. Personnages publics, acteurs économiques, représentants du monde culturel, beaucoup d’entre eux se sont nourris intellectuellement et physiquement dans cet endroit improbable.

Un rapport militantisme – cuisine qui a été la marque de fabrique du lieu. Un point d’équilibre entre la tête et le ventre.

Donato Rotunno est né à Luxembourg en 1966 et est diplômé de l’IAD en Belgique en 1992. Il a fondé Tarantula Luxembourg en 1995, avec laquelle il a produit plus de 30 longs-métrages depuis. Sa carrière de réalisateur a commencée avec son film de fin d’études Nebbiolo Rosso et s’est développée avec des documentaires sur des sujets spécifiques au Luxembourg, dont l’immigration (Terra Mia Terra Nostra, Les Mesures du rectangle), le multiculturalisme (Blà Blä Blá); ou des films traitant de la politique comme André et les voix dissidentes, ou bien de la relation entre l’art contemporain et les films à travers Making of a picture, Landscape with a corpse et Dreams have a language. Son premier film de fiction, In a Dark Place a remporté le prix de la meilleure contribution artistique au Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis en 2007. Son deuxième long-métrage, Baby(a)lone, adapté du roman Amok de Tullio Forgiarini, a été sélectionné dans de nombreux festivals internationaux et choisi pour représenter le Luxembourg aux 88ème Academy Awards dans la catégorie du meilleur film en langue étrangère. Io sto bene, son troisième film, a eu sa première mondiale au Festival Alice nella città à Rome en 2020 et a représenté le Luxembourg aux Academy Awards pour le meilleur film étranger en 2021. Avec La Fourchette à gauche, il se penche sur le Cercle Culturel Curiel et son influence sur la vie politique et culturelle au Luxembourg. Actuellement, il travaille sur son prochain documentaire Capitales Europe – la bataille des sièges.

La projection sera suivie d'un débat avec le réalisateur du film Donato Rotunno et une dégustation des spécialités italiennes et du vin luxembougeois.

The event is organized by the Embassy of Luxembourg in the Czech Republic and the French Institute in Prague as part of the Francophonie Days 2025.

On the eve of their building’s destruction after more than 50 years, how did the Cercle Culturel Curiel and its trattoria, come to have a major influence on the political and cultural life of Luxembourg?

In the house located at 107 Route d’Esch, the Circolo Eugenio Curiel association finds themselves in a pickle. The Luxembourgish headquarters of the Italian Communist Party – which ceased to exist in 1991 to form the Social-Democratic Party, was targeted by the real estate projects spreading all over the capital. The building was destroyed at the beginning of 2024.

Architecturally speaking, the building was nothing out of the ordinary. Yet, since the Circolo acquired it in 1978, it made the days of several Luxembourgish political organizations and other associations. Meeting rooms and the trattoria are both part of a memorial in the hearts of the Left Parties.

Keeping a trace means above all talking about the birth of a cultural cradle for Luxembourg, the result of which surrounds us and feeds us unconsciously today. Public figures, economic players, representatives of the cultural world, many of them have nourished themselves intellectually and physically in this unlikely place. The relationship between activism and cuisine has been the hallmark of the place. A balance between head and belly.

Donato Rotunno was born in Luxembourg in 1966 and gratuated from IAD in Belgium in 1992. He founded Tarantula Luxembourg in 1995, through which, to date, he has produced over 50 feature films. His career as a film director started with his graduation film Nebbiolo Rosso and continued with documentaries on specific themes to Luxembourg, including immigration (Terra Mia Terra Nostra, Les Mesures du rectangle), multi cultural society (Blà Blä Blá) ; questionning the role of politics with André et les voix dissidentes, and the relationship between contemporary art and film through Making of a picture, Landscape with a corpse, Dreams have a language. His first fiction film, In a Dark Place, won the award for best artistic contribution at the Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis in 2007. His second film, Baby(a)lone, an adaptation of the novel “Amok” by Tullio Forgiarini, was selected in many international film festivals and was chosen to represent Luxembourg at the 88th Academy Awards for Best International feature film award. Io sto bene, his 3rd feature had its world premiere at the Alice nella cita Festival in Rome in 2020 and was also chosen to represent Luxembourg at the Academy Awards for Best International feature film in 2021. Today, he returns to documentary with What’s left? to look at the Cercle Culturel Curiel and its influence on the political and cultural life in Luxembourg.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director Donato Rotunno and a tasting of Italian delicacies and Luxembourg wine.
